‘Samanantar’ meaning ‘Parallel’, is a film that looks into the lives of two women who are seemingly
poles apart in terms of character and personality. Both women are personifications of two
stereotypes of women seen in the Indian society. One is a conservative traditional housewife and
the other is an ambitious, professional working women who married for love. The film draws
parallels between the two marriages through the perspective of the women and looks at the
possibility of dissatisfaction springing from coveting a relationship like that of the other.
At its core the film looks at the idea of dependence and its effects in a relationship. Both couples
exhibit different degrees of dependence, which results in the root conflict in the film. Although both
women choose and live a life of their liking, they find themselves drawing comparisons to one
another. Both appear happier to the other and there on begin to observe their own relationship with
their husbands with dissatisfaction.
